Week 1: November 14 - November 18
- Monday, November 14th - No School. Inservice Day.
- Tuesday, November 15th
- Overview of what you will learn in Computer Applications. Check the Course Description with details about the Course Grade Contract.
- Show examples of student projects.
- Create a bookmark for the Computer Applicatons Home Page in your web browser.
- Verify that all students are authenticated onto the network and can retrieve email. Students get voice-over scripts from email to practice them but do not print
them.
- Create a Computer Applications folder on your hard drive for saving project files that I send you or that you make.
- Save the grade contract that I emailed you to your Computer Applications folder.
- Demonstrate how to use the sound board and microphone to record, save, and email a sound file.
- Begin recording Microphone Voice-overs:
- Record either script #1 or #2 using the sound board and Sound Edit 16.
- Save the sound file as a wav file with your first name as the name of the file as in Joe.wav or Amanda.wav
- Email me and yourself the wav file when you are done.
- Wednesday, November 16th
- Demonstrate proper handling and operation of the Camcorder.
- Demonstrate how to frame someone who is being interviewed.
- Demonstate how to countdown and record someone who is speaking on camera.
- Students record practice on-camera presentations using the script given them with a buddy. Students will capture their own video and digitize as a QuickTime or AVI movie.
- Demonstrate how to capture camcorder video using FinalCut Pro.
- Demonstrate how to mark clips and add clips to a sequence with a 1 second cross dissolve.
- Demonstrate how to add Video Black to the first and end of a sequence.
- Demonstrate how to add clips to a sequence with a dissolve transition
- Demonstrate how to superimpose text over video for identifying persons or places.
- Demonstrate how to render a sequence
- Demonstrate how to export the sequence as a QuickTime movie with a particular size.
- Students begin capturing their practice videos. See the itemized list of things to do under Friday.
- Friday, November 18th
- Each student digitizes his practice video doing the following:
- Capture the best take of your two takes
- Mark in and out points for your captured clip
- Create a new sequence
- Add Video Black at the beginning of your sequence
- Add your clip to the sequence with a dissolve transition
- Add Video Black at the end of your sequence and add a dissolve transition
- Superimpose your name at some point over your clip in the sequence
- Render your sequence
- Export your sequence as either a QuickTime movie with a size of 640 x 480 and save it in the CA_Practice folder on the desktop.
- If you have a Windows machine, convert your QuickTime movie to an AVI movie using QuickTime Pro.
- Transfer your movie to your computer using a thumb drive and then copy it to your computer.
Week 1B: November 21 - November 25
- Monday, November 21st
- Complete capturing video, digitizing, and exporting your practice video.
- Try importing your video into an Open Office Impress Slide.
- Bring electronic pictures with you to school tomorrow. Place them in your Computer Applications folder on your hard drive.
- Tuesday, November 22nd - (Friday Schedule)
- Try using these features of Open Office Impress:
- Choosing a background for all slides of a presentation
- Adding Title and Subtitles
- Adding Slides
- Adding Action Buttons
- Selecting a transition
- Importing your movie and sound files
- Wednesday, November 23rd - No School. Thanksgiving Holiday Break.
- Friday, November 25th - No School. Thanksgiving Holiday Break.
Week 2: November 28 - December 2
- Monday, November 28th
- Begin creating your Open Office Impress Presentation using your personal digital pictures.
- The presentation needs to include these elements:
- A Title Slide with a main title, a subtitle, and at least three phrases that indicate slides that Action Buttons will connect to
- Ten Slides that contain a title, picture, and one line text caption below the picture.
- Choose an appropriate background for presenting your pictures on each slide.
- Various transitions between all slides
- A 10 to 15 second microphone voice-over WAV sound file recorded with the sound board that will discuss what is being seen on one of your files. The WAV file should be inserted onto the slide that you are discussing.
- A 10 to 15 movie file recorded with the camcorder that will discuss what is being seen on one of your files. The movie file should be inserted onto the slide that you are discussing.
- At least 3 Action Buttons on your Title Slide that will connect to 3 individual special slides in your presentation.
- Tuesday, November 29th
- Record microphone voice-overs or on-camera movies for your presentation.
- Continue workin on your Open Office Impress Presentation.
- Wednesday, November 30th
- Record microphone voice-overs or on-camera movies for your presentation.
- Complete work on your Open Office Impress Presentation by the first of class Friday and be ready to give me your presentation slide, sound file, and movie file.
- Friday, December 2nd
- Begin and complete Word Processing Skills Project #1. Email me the document file when you are done. Do NOT PRINT IT!!
- Begin Word Processing Skills Project #2 by simply creating a new file in the Open Office Text Editor and doing the following:
- Save the file immediately as WP Skills #2 ... don't use any other name.
- Complete the project and then make changes to the document margins to make sure everything fits on one page.
- Check to see if your document looks like this ... Class Schedule & Interests Key.
- Print the document when you are done on one sheet of paper and then email me the file also. This will be one of the few documents you will print.
Week 3: December 5 - December 9
- Monday, December 5th
- Install Eclipse and Web Page Software.
- Tuesday, December 6th
- Get from email all of the starter files for Word Processing Skills Project #3, #4, #5, #6, and #7.
- Begin and complete Word Processing Skills Project #3 - Text Wrapping.
- Begin and complete Word Processing Skills Project #4 - Pamplet.
- Begin and complete Word Processing Skills Project #5 - Drawing Skills.
- Begin and complete Word Processing Skills Project #6 - Flow Chart.
- Begin Word Processing Skills Project #7 - Multiplication Table.
- Wednesday, December 7th
- Complete Word Processing Skills Project #7 - Multiplication Table.
- Email me WordProcessingSkills #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 when they are all completed.
- Discuss spreadsheets and how they should be laid out.
- Begin and complete Spreadsheet Project 1. Email me both the Spreadsheet1.xls file and the SpringBudgetAnalysis.doc file when you are done.
- Bring your laptop to me so I can download and install Eclipse and DreamWeaver on your computers during A, C, or D periods this week.
- Friday, December 9th
- Complete installations of Eclipse and Kompozer.
- Discuss and begin Spreadsheet Project 2.
Week 4: December 12 - December 16
- Monday, December 12th
- Continue working on Spreadsheet Project 2.
- Tuesday, December 13th
- Complete SpreadSheet Project 2. Email me both the Spreadsheet2.ods file and the AnnualUtilities.odt file when you are done.
- Explore Open Office Draw - the drawing software of Open Office.
- Create a drawing of some kind using Open Office Draw. Once you are done follow these steps:
- Select just the drawing with the Selector Tool.
- Choose Export from the File menu.
- From the File Type pop-up menu choose JPEG and click the Selection box.
- Navigate to your Computer Applications folder and click Save.
- In the JPEG Options pop-up window, choose 100% Quality and True Colors.
- Find the file in your Computer Applications folder and double click on it. Make sure only what you selected was saved as the JPEG.
- (Later when you make your home page you will make an artistic design with Open Office Draw and save it as a JPEG and embed it in your home page.
- Eclipse programming demonstration of drawing commands using the GeometryApplet program by finishing the code together.
- Wednesday, December 14th
- Complete coding the GeometryApplet program by finishing the code.
- Begin programming Eclipse project 1 ... HouseApplet. Here is what the final program should look like: HouseApplet.
- For homework: Continue programming Eclipse project 1 ... HouseApplet.
- Friday, December 16th
- Continue programming Eclipse project 1 - HouseApplet in class.
Week 5: January 2 - January 6
- Monday, January 2nd - No School.

Week 6: January 9 - January 13
- Monday, January 9th
- Continue programming Eclipse project 2 - UFOApplet.
- If you get done with the UFOApplet program, then begin Free Lance Program #1. In this program you will draw anything you want. This is not a graded progam but gives you the chance to make an applet program that draws and paints anything you want.
- Tuesday, January 10th
- Complete programming Eclipse project 2 - UFOApplet.
- Wednesday, January 11th
- Go over Eclipse Project 3 - Animated Car.
- Go to the Complete Car Logo List Web Page and pick a car logo for your car. Download it to your Applets folder in your Eclipse workspace.
- Begin coding Eclipse Project 3 - Animated Car.
- Friday, January 13th
- Continue coding Eclipse Project 3 - Animated Car.
Week 7: January 16 - January 20
- Monday, January 16th
- No School. Martin Luther King Holiday.
- Tuesday, January 17th
- Complete coding Eclipse Project 3 - Animated Car.
- Continue working on Free Lance Java Projects if you get done with Animated Car until everyone is done.
- Wednesday, January 18th
- Complete coding Eclipse Project 3 - Animated Car.
- Continue working on Free Lance Java Projects if you get done with Animated Car until everyone is done.
- Friday, January 20th
- Explore Kompozer and try editing your default home page to see if it saves
- Begin the Web Page Skills #1 Project: The Home Page
Week 8: January 23 - January 27
- Monday, January 23rd
- Continue working on Web Page Skills #1 Project: The Home Page. Today we will do the following:
- Add the Date at the top of the page. This will get updated everytime you save.
- Add the Personal section to your home page. Type a paragraph of information that best describes you.
- Add the Interests/Extra-Curricular Section to your home page. List all sports and activities in school and out of school that you participate in.
- Add the Important Links Section to your home page. Make links to kcd.org, and the Upper School Home Page
- Add the table at the bottom of the page and add the two graphics as roll-over images and a link to the Computer Applications Home Page.
- Add a Back to Top link at the bottom of the home page and an anchor at the top of the page.
- Record Weekly Sports Announcements.
- Tuesday, January 24th
- Complete making the Back to Top link and verify that it works.
- Go over operation and use of the still digital camera.
- Go over downloading pictures from the camera to a laptop.
- Each student has someone take a picture of him or her and then the student downloads it as a jpeg file and emails it to his or herself.
- Students add their pictures to their home page.
- Students record "Welcome" voice-over for their home page. Email them to yourself. Save them to your sounds folder, then embed them in your web page.
- Complete work on Web Page Skills #1 Project: The Home Page.
- Continue taking pictures for web pages and download them from the camera and then save them to your pixs folder on the WebServ.
- Record microphone voice-over wav file "Welcome" for your home page and save it to your sounds folder on the WebServ.
- Finish embedding your web page welcome voice-over sound file and your still picture on your home page.
- Demonstrate how to make relative links with the Colors Web Site.
- Wednesday, January 25th
- Complete taking picture and recording Home Page voice-overs.
- Use a table to control the placement of text and your picture in your Personal section of your home page.
- Go over how to embed a sound in a web page.
- Go over making relative links to other web pages using the Colors Web Site as an example.
- Complete editing the pages in the The Colors Site (DreamWeaver Skills #2).
- Friday, January 27th
- No School. Winter Conferences.

- Read the handout sheet for DreamWeaver Skills #3: The Cool Stuff Page.
- Begin recording microphone voice-over wav files for your CoolStuff page.

- Discuss further possible topics for Educational Web Site.
- Review requirements for the Educational Web Site Project. Get approval of project from instructor.
- Research topics for Educational Web Site project.
