Anatomy/Physiology Study Guide (35.1, 37.1, 37.3, 38.2)

So you are responsible for the following:

What is the difference between anatomy and physiology? How are they related?

Know the hierarchy of organization in the body: cell->tissue->organ->organ system…

You should know the 4 types of tissues and a sentence or so description of any broad characteristics of each and where you might find them, or what they might do…

Be able to give a brief description of the function of each of your 11 organ systems and any relevant organs (yes, the skin is an organ).

Be able to walk me through the digestive system, outlining what occurs in each portion. Be able to answer where the majority of digestion occurs, and what the stages of food processing are.

What characteristics must a respiratory surface have? What two things does a respiratory system exchange?

Structurally, how are the respiratory, circulatory, excretory, and digestive systems similar? Be able to discuss how these four systems interact with each other.

Be able to outline the flow of blood through the body, knowing the four chambers of the heart and where each leads. You should know what the terms pulmonary and systemic mean. What is a heart attack and what causes it. How is this similar to a stroke?

How do nutrients get from blood to cells? For that matter, what all does blood carry (what four jobs does it do)?

What is negative feedback (also called feedback inhibition)? How does it relate to homeostasis? Be able to give an example.

Well, those are the high points.

Don’t get bogged down in the details of the chapters. If I never mentioned anything about it, the odds are it probably won’t be stressed on the exam… A good idea might be to make flash cards for all of these things (tissue types, organ systems, parts of the digestive system, etc) to help review.
