The Ornithology class has been offered as an elective at KCD since 2003. Currently, the KCD Ornithology class is the only high school Ornithology class being offered in the entire state of Kentucky (if you know of another, please let us know!). The objective of the class is to introduce students to different types of local birds, learn how to recognize them in the field, become acquainted with their habitat, as well as provide bird houses here on campus. Furthermore, we hope for the students to gain a better appreciation for their natural surroundings. The campus consists of approximately 100 acres with open fields, dense pockets of deciduous forests, and a retention pond. All of these different habitats attract different bird species. Presently, KCD has a total of 13 bird houses and 4 bird feeders.
